With a Little Help from My Friends

This year all of our exciting connected learning is inspired by songs by the fabulous band ‘The Beatles’! Our next focus is ‘With a Little Help from My Friends’.

EYFS

In Early Years, the children are learning all about people who help us, local and super! They will be meeting some local heroes and people who help them in their local community before exploring some super heroes!

They will be building their role play skills, by acting out all of the roles and adding in writing skills to enhance their play! With the help of Superworm and Supertato, the children will solve their own crimes and explore how they can help others too!

Year 1 and 2

Key Stage One will explore stories with the theme of friendship through their class book ‘The Wolf, the Duck and the Mouse’ and are looking forward to reading ‘Lila and the Secret of Rain.’ The children in Year 1 and Year 2 will learn all about schools in the past and will gain knowledge of the continents and oceans in Geography. In Science, we will put our knowledge of different materials to the test by designing a piece of furniture and an item of waterproof clothing. Our creative project celebrates teamwork, as we work together to create a clay water vessel.  We are also going to be using our computers to create, collaborate and communicate.

Year 3 and 4

In Years 3 and 4 we will be developing our understanding of what it means to belong to a community. Our class text, Varjak Paw, will be ignited by a visit to the York Cat Trail and we will be exploring themes of friendship and belonging in this story. We will use our Computing skills to research the trail and will be presenting information in a persuasive leaflet.  In History we will start to learn about what life was like in the Stone Age. Our Science investigations will be all about forces and magnets and we will be comparing how things move on different surfaces. This will link to our creative project where we will be designing and constructing a moving vehicle. In RE we will be exploring the question ‘Why do people pray?

Year 5 and 6

This half term, Years 5 & 6 will be developing their knowledge and skills by exploring a number of concepts within the theme – with a little help from my friends. During our history based learning, children will identify the key events during WWII and how friends (allies) were essential in affecting its outcome. In art, we will be creating propaganda posters to try and recruit some more allies, using sketchbooks to develop our ideas. In computing, we will use chromebook software to create a wanted poster and a news story linked to our class novel Skellig. Children will explore different materials in science – thinking about which materials would act as the best protection for protecting our friends/allies. Within RE & PSHE we will be exploring opinions and viewpoints and how to respect what our friends believe.

Our learning will be celebrated during our showcase and INSPIRE sessions shared with parents and governors. During our ‘Haxby Road 100’ week the children are excited to return to educational visits and already have a list of places they would like to go.
